Proprietary Food

It is a food product category which includes all the food products that has not been standardised under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011. It is a new category introduced by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, to bring about the uniformity in the stringency of regulatory standards for all kinds of food products. This initiative also lead to the growth in the development and processing of innovative food products.

However, products such as supplements, nutraceuticals or functional foods are excluded from this category and has been allotted a separate segment of regulatory standards to adhere to. The category of proprietary foods has been strictly restricted to the food products which may include the following:

• Non-Standardised milk based sweets
• Beverages based on more than one principal ingredient
• Non-Standardised cereal products and food grains
• Snack Products
• Energy Drinks
• Food Product based on the mixture of non-standardised ingredients
• New Product, with no existing history
• Food Products in which the constituents are separated and altered.
• Existing products, with the major proportion of its ingredients modified.
